Understanding Trauma

Trauma is not just something that happened in the past. Trauma is what the nervous system learned to do in order to survive.

Many people who experienced trauma look very "high functioning" on the outside. They work hard, achieve, take care of others, and push through. But inside they may feel anxious, disconnected, overwhelmed, or exhausted.

Trauma can come from:

  • Childhood emotional neglect
  • Growing up too fast
  • Always being the responsible one
  • Not feeling safe to express emotions
  • Medical events or surgeries
  • Loss or grief
  • Accidents
  • Abuse
  • Chronic stress

Trauma therapy helps people:

  • Feel safer in their body
  • Understand their triggers
  • Process unresolved experiences
  • Reduce anxiety and emotional overwhelm
  • Change survival patterns
  • Build healthier relationships
  • Feel more like themselves again

Healing from trauma does not mean pretending it didn't happen. It means your nervous system no longer has to live as if it is still happening.
